EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW before your first reformer pilates class!🩰
It can be intimidating trying something new! And I’d never want that to be a barrier to someone wanting to try pilates, so I came up with some tips to help you feel more comfortable💓
1. Get to the Studio Early ⏰
Get to your studio about 10-15 min early so you can get to know your studio. It’s also a good time to talk to your instructor! Let them know you are brand new and if you have any conditions/injuries they should be aware of.
2. Be Prepared 🤓
~Bring water and a pair of grip socks. My favs are from @taviactive @toesox
~Show up in comfortable workout clothes but avoid baggy clothes like sweatpants/loose shorts
~Avoid wearing a claw clip/bun/high pony. Have a hair style where you can lie down flat on your back (braid/low pony)
3. Consistency is Key 🔑
I know you will feel amazing after your first session, but tangible results aren’t instant- so if you want to reap all the amazing benefits of pilates (better posture, mobility, strength,etc!) then you should go at least 2x a week!

Let’s talk about the GLUTE MEDIUS 🍑🍑- aka that upper/outer glute muscle that gives you a SHELF🍑
But more than just aesthetics, the glute med is essential in providing hip and pelvic stability, as well as balance⚖️
These are a few mat pilates exercise that target it:
1. Side-Lying Abduction
2. Clam Shells
3. Side-Kick
4. Side-Lying leg circles
5. Fire Hydrants
6. Single-Leg bridges
As a rule of thumb, most hip abduction work, especially with slight internal rotation will really target that glute medius the most😉
Also PSA that this video simply serves as inspo to target a certain muscle group and should be incorporated into a well-rounded, full-body sequence for max benefit☺️
There is a STARK difference between my 2 jobs🤣 engineer👩🏼🔧 and pilates instructor🩰 may seem very random but it isn’t all that crazy when you think about it!
I’ve always had a passion for movement, and understanding how things work. While going through my pilates training, I realized the body operates a lot like a machine and pilates is basically just inventing a series of exercises to get the body working and moving efficiently. Most people have some sort of an imbalance/inefficiency and I love being able to trouble shoot and problem solve with creative solutions🥰 hopefully that makes sense in some way and isn’t too nerdy🤣🤓
Let’s work some glutes and core during the menstrual phase🩸I recommend this for day 2 or 3 of your cycle, but ultimately listen to your body! this one is quick and gentle, but effective!🤍🤍

your new go-to recipe when you’re on your moon cycle!🌙
ingredients:
1 serving udon noodles
1.5 tbsp miso paste
1/3 pack of tofu
1 nori/seaweed sheet
optional green onion (garnish)
1. bring about 2 cups of water to a boil and add your udon noodles
2. while cooking, add tofu and miso paste and let dissolve.
3. once noodles are cooked, turn off heat and add nori sheets.
4. transfer to bowl, add green onion if desired and enjoy!
this miso soup is so quick and easy to make! your body will thank you for how nourishing it is☺️🤍

how is trying to create less harm in the world through food choices propaganda😂 and is it not “propaganda” that as veganism has gained popularity, there’s been a huge narrative to push “animal protein” as superior?? (and it’s never backed with any evidence).

do you ever find footwork boring??
sure, it’s not the most exciting part of Pilates, but there’s a good reason we usually start each class with it!
while the legs are heavily targeted in this exercise, the whole body has a role to play when footwork is done correctly. here are just some of the reasons footwork is so important!
🦶foot/ankle mobility - stabilizes, mobilizes and strengthens areas around ankle joints and bottom feet. (so necessary since our feet are so restricted in shoes everyday!)
🦵lower body strength - strengthens quads, hamstrings, calves, and glutes.
🧍♀️body awareness - Moving through different foot positions (toes, arches, heels) builds body awareness, and understanding of how the lower limbs interact with the ground or equipment.
🔥warms up body - just like in any exercise we want to warm up the body to prepare the joints and muscles for more complex movements.
😮💨breath control - footwork trains the breath to movement connection and lays the groundwork for promoting oxygen flow and healthy breathing through other exercises
📏body alignment - proper foot placement helps align the ankles, knees, hips, and spine, promoting better posture and symmetry throughout the body.
🩻core engagement- although it appears leg-focused, footwork initiates movement from the core, encouraging controlled engagement of the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
🧠mind-body connection - footwork should be done with precision and intention. not only will it sharpen focus, but it helps build body awareness and alignment to help you get the most out of the exercise!
is it ok to practice inversions on your period?🤸♀️
according to traditional Hatha yoga and Ayurveda.. the answer is NO🚫😢
🤨WHY are we told this? In traditional Hatha and Ayurveda it is recommended for women who are menstruating to avoid inversions as to not disrupt the apana. Apana is responsible for the downward flow of Prana or energy in the body and regulates the elimination of wastes and toxins in the body. The belief is that inverting while on your period disturbs this natural flow and can lead to retrograde menstruation, heavier flows, and even worsened cramping.
But it’s complicated😵💫… many believe this principal is merely a theory and not backed by any true evidence. Some even go as far as to say it is an outdated belief rooted in sexism.
My personal opinion? I tend to believe in taking it easier during my period anyway, and refraining from any sort of strenuous activity on the body. Generally my practice during my menstrual cycle leans towards something more restorative, like yin yoga, light stretching, or walking because that is what feels best for ME.
This most important thing you can do is ✨listen to YOUR body✨and tune in to how it feels. Do inversions feel good to you on your period? Then go for it! If you do continue to challenge yourself with inversions on your period, evaluate the effects afterwards. Does your flow feel heavier or lighter? Are your cramps better or worse?
BUTTTT… can you ask yourself why you can’t slow down and take the time for yourself to rest?🫣 Often times, we feel pressured to keep up with the hustle and bustle around us and doing so leads to so much unnecessary stress and anxiety. Can you use this unique opportunity to slow down, get some well deserved rest, and tune in?💓
(also tb to 2022 when i was in Singapore for my job and filmed this. I’d like to think my handstand form has improved a bit since then, but probably not enough🤣)

here is some inspiration of what to buy at the grocery store when you’re in your menstrual phase! everything shown is all vegan of course, but you can tailor this exactly to your own diet by focusing on foods that contain the following:
-iron🫘 :replenishes iron from blood loss
-vitamin c🍊:aids in iron absorption
-vitamin b🍠 :sustained energy and mood
-omega-3s🥑 :anti-inflammatory to help cramping
-magnesium🍫 : relaxes muscles, helps cramping
-fiber🫐 : helps digestion and bloating
i want to add that you don’t need to stress yourself out trying to eat only foods that fit in to these categories. your biggest focus should be eating a healthy, balanced diet and to make sure you are eating enough to support your body🤍 you will naturally get all the macros and nutrients you need this way anyway. this is just a little cycle-syncing boost⚡️

my yuki turned 1 today!🤍🤍 we rescued him a little over a month ago now but it feels like we’ve known him since birth. he may be deaf (and very much noisy and obnoxious sometimes🤣) but he doesn’t let that hold him back and is still the most confident and unbothered animal I have ever met! he will never truly know just how much happiness and laughter he has brought me but I believe he can feel how much love I have for him (which is more than words can describe).🤍
Friendly reminder that yoga is not a sport :) While it does have NUMEROUS physical benefits, the physical practice of asanas (which most people just call yoga) is only 1 aspect of the 8 limbs of yoga. I think it’s important to have respect for the lineage and not forget the true intent behind yoga.
If you primarily enjoy the physical aspect of asanas in yoga, I really invite you to try mat Pilates! Some of the moves are similar to yoga poses but it focuses more on repetitive movements and core engagement. It will also improve your flexibility, posture, and balance just like yoga!
Personally, I have found that Pilates is very restorative and rehabilitative while yoga is more mindful and intentional. Pilates helped me heal from injuries I actually got from doing asanas; while yoga has helped me heal my mind and grow as a person.

The last 4 months were nothing short of difficult and most importantly (to me) unhealthy.
My job as a marine engineer is not something I usually tell people about both here and in person. It’s not something I particularly identify with, or am proud of. In fact, I find it quite embarrassing to tell people 🙈. It’s probably because it is nearly the opposite of what I embody as a person.
Let’s be real, this does not exactly fit in to my whole healthy/feminine/fitness aesthetic. And tbh I was not able to maintain what I normally preach on here. Guess who skipped BREAKFAST and hardly worked out for 4 months!?(🫣🙋♀️)
But I never want to give a false impression or make things look easier than they are. So even though I heavily debated sharing any of this, I would rather be transparent. I do not enjoy it AT ALL, but this job is how I am able to live my dream life when I’m home. And I plan to use it to my advantage until I am able to financially support myself with the job I actually want and enjoy, which is helping women live healthy lives through pilates, yoga, and learning about their cycles.
Leave 10 min earlier. You’ll get where you’re going earlier, you’ll drive safer, and you’ll be able to appreciate your surroundings more🤍
I always come back to this technique whenever I am feeling anxious or nervous.🤍
I first learned about this method from a @hubermanlab podcast and it has never failed me since. The method is called the “physiological sigh” and was discovered in the 1930s as a natural breathing pattern in humans and animals during moments of stress, fatigue, or relaxation.
The reason it is ACTUALLY effective is because the two inhales help fully inflate the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs) and clear out excess carbon dioxide trapped in the lungs. By exhaling slowly and deeply, the body expels all that carbon dioxide, which typically accumulates when we’re stressed and lead to feelings of anxiety..
How many times has someone told you “calm down and take some deep breaths”? And it usually doesn’t help right? It’s less about taking deep breaths and more about breathing slowly and maximizing the exchange of air in the lungs. The physiological sigh is effective because it works directly on the respiratory and nervous systems, offering an immediate way to manage stress and improve emotional regulation. To all my girls who struggle with anxiety, you need to try this, I promise it will help🤍

This is your inner fall! Focus on comfort foods that are rich in vitamins, calcium, and fiber.
Did you know you burn up to 200 more calories a day during this phase? Make sure you are eating enough by packing in dense foods like coconut yogurt and walnuts. Adding in a juice like carrot juice is also a great way to get more vitamins and minerals in.

This is your inner winter! Choose a breakfast that is comforting and feels good for you.

Did you know this applies for any back bending/back extension stretches too? You definitely don’t need a yoga wheel to get all these benefits (but it really does give you a good massage I must say).
Back bends are amazing for counteracting the forward hunch that many of us are sitting in all day at our desks or over our phones. This is why it is SO GOOD for improving posture and fighting against “tech neck” or forward head posture.
Back bending can also help with back and neck pain because it allows the spine to extend and decompress, relieving tension.
And did you know back bending can actually help you sleep!? Back bending increases “Kapha”, 1 of the 3 doshas in Ayurveda. This dosha is associated with all things slow and steady and is best to do in the evenings. It promotes relaxation by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, especially if you focus on slow and steady breathing during the stretch.😌🤍

My go-to flow when I’m feeling really crampy and in pain😫. I HIGHLY recommend the makeshift heating pad too! Even though you might not feel up to it, moving the body when you’re suffering from bloating and cramps helps so much! I promise just 5 minutes of gentle movement will make you feel much better🤍

It was a great month! I got about halfway through my Pilates certification, did some climbing, saw some beautiful sunsets, and got to explore Tampa with my favorite people 🤍 Looking forward to what September brings🍂🌻
Let me TELL you: I did not have high hopes for this at ALL. I wanted to try it as a fun activity since we had a little sushi kit hanging around and all the ingredients. But it actually came out WAY better than I expected! It was really not too hard and ended up being super yummy 😋
I have never been a big sushi person 🍣. Anything resembling fish or anything with a mild fishy flavor (even nori) 🐟 was never my cup of tea for the longest time.
I have slowly been warming up to sushi but most of the time when I have found vegan sushi at restaurants they try to replicate the fishy part and I never like it.
I finally decided to make it at home and choose what I put in to it.
Ingredients I used:
🍥 3 Nori sheets
🥒 1 cucumber julienned
🥕 2 carrots julienned
🥑 1 avocado sliced
🌱1/4 pack of fava tofu
🍚 1 cup sushi rice
Instructions
1. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori leaving about an inch of space at the top
2. Assemble ingredients in a log shape at the bottom and roll! (You don’t need the wooden mat to roll, but it makes it easier)
3. Cut the sushi into 3/4 inch slices with a sharp knife and enjoy with soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger on the side🥰

1 year ago I graduated from the 200hr Yoga teacher training @gyan_yog_breath in Rishikesh🥹! It was a huge dream of mine to become a yoga teacher and I feel so grateful I got to do it in such a special place. I learned SO much and will carry the things I learned with me for the rest of my life!
I have been going through a lot of my old notes recently and started studying the Hatha Pradipika again and it has been inspiring me so much to deepen my practice more. Over the past year, I had a lot of changes in my life and I started to drift away from practicing and studying yoga as much. I am slowly being called back to it though as I can never forget my roots and all the incredible things I learned while I was here. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are commonly found in teflon(non-stick pans), plastic, candles, scented soaps, detergents, and perfumes. The reason EDCs are so harmful to a healthy hormonal balance is because they mimic hormones our body naturally produces like estrogen. When the body recognizes this “fake” estrogen, it can throw off an already delicate system leading to many negative side effects.
Non-Stick Pans🍳: Teflon coated non-stick pans (and most other non-stick alternatives) contain polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a known EDC. They can interfere with thyroid function, disrupt reproductive hormones, and have been linked to a variety of health problems, including reduced fertility, altered metabolism, and even certain cancers.
Recommend: Cast Iron and stainless steel
Plastic Water Bottles💧: The plastic used in water bottles typically contain BPA and phthalates (well-known EDCs). BPA mimics estrogen, and phthalates can interfere with testosterone production and impede metabolism and thyroid function.
Recommends: Reusable glass/stainless steel water bottle
Scented Items🫧: Phthalates, often used to stabilize fragrance in scented products, can act as EDCs. They have been linked to reproductive issues, hormonal imbalances, and developmental problems.

Why I love it:
-NUTRIENTS: Celery juice is a rich source of Vitamins K & A, potassium and folate⚡️
-ANTI-INFLAMMATORY: Parsley and celery together contain many powerful antioxidants like ferric acid, luteolin, and apigenin🤍
-HYDRATING: Packed with tons of minerals and electrolytes, it super hydrating and refreshing 💦
Ingredients:
-1 bunch of celery
-1 green apple
-2 lemons with skin
-1/2 bunch of parsley
-1/2 cucumber (optional)
Wash ingredients thoroughly, juice, and store for up to 3 days. This makes about 2-3 servings!

Workout with me in my Luteal phase!💞🌸
The Luteal phase is the longest phase lasting about 10-14 days before your period. In the beginning, your estrogen will be higher causing you to have slightly more energy⚡️ and will dip down📉 in the second half leading up to your period.
Here are some exercises I love to do in the first half of the Luteal phase:
-jogging/incline walking 🏃♀️
-power yoga 🧘♀️
-pilates🤸♀️
-rock climbing🧗♀️
-lifting/strength training🏋️♀️

This week was from the first half of my Luteal phase when I had a lot of energy to still jog and do something active 6x a week! My second half of the week certainly looked a little different with only 3 Pilates classes and 4 rest days😅
This is just an example of my week but it may look different each time! There is no secret formula except to listen to your body and do what you feel up to doing! Always remember that resting does not mean you are losing progress or being lazy💔, it means you are honoring and respecting how your body feels❤️

Let’s get it right: the female body is beautiful at EVERY stage, but it is also wildly complex.
Nearly every day, our bodies are going through some type of hormonal fluctuation📉📈 (sometimes drastic, sometimes subtle depending on the time of month) and it’s only natural that our bodies are going to reflect that!
Think of the Luteal and menstrual phase as your inner fall/winter🍂❄️🧦 you may have less energy, want to stay in more and forage more snacks from the pantry.
The lining of your uterus is thickening and getting ready to shed🩸, it’s gathering as much nutrients and sustenance as it can and you may notice some extra bloating at this point because of it.
The follicular phase can be compared to your inner spring/summer🌸☀️🌊 and is the point at which we have the most energy and motivation.
Your estrogen levels will be the highest at this point, and you may feel more social, notice your skin clearing up, and your body to feel more toned and lean.
That being said, your body will not look and feel the same everyday‼️ Once I began to understand this, I was able to give myself a lot more grace for not always feeling and looking (what I perceived to be) my best.
Our bodies are so beautiful and fascinating and my one wish would be for every woman to understand this and show more kindness to themself at every stage🤍

Ingredients:
🥛 1-1.5 cups of plant-based milk
🍦1-2 scoops vanilla protein powder
💚1 scoop matcha dissolved in water
